One of the world’s leading IT solutions companies, NIIT, has fruitfully implemented its blockchain and Alexa applications making use of IATA’s Airline Industry Data Model (AIDM) to provide top quality travel experience to the airline passengers. According to a press release, dated October 4, 2018, the new solutions were showcased at IATA’s Global Airport Passenger Symposium (GAPS) 2018, being held in Athens, Greece from October 2-4.

Quick Settlement and Reconciliation of Transactions

The use of distributed ledger technology (DLT) can potentially provide numerous benefits to the aviation industry.

As per the press release, NIIT Technologies’ Alexa application will enable the passengers to have more granular information about their flights – including bookings, and frequent flyer details.

IATA’s AIDM data structure played a pivotal role in the development of the said application, as it helps in gathering the required data from multiple sources.

The AIDM data structure also helps in the backend settlement process on Hyperledger Fabric, as it transfers the data to Chain-m – a cutting-edge DLT-based solution developed by NIIT which allows the airlines and partners in a quick reconciliation of transactions through smart contracts built on Chaincode.

Anil Batra, Transformation leader, Travel and Transportation, NIIT Technologies, said:

“AIDM aims to increase the consistency of data definition, break silos and provide a standard messaging to improve interoperability, and reduces risk of project failure. Our deep domain expertise in the airline industry helped in understanding the AIDM process well and building applications catering to the entire spectrum of airline function.”

Sharing Batra’s positive outlook towards the AIDM was Marie Masserey, Head Industry Architecture at IATA.

She stated:

“The AIDM was conceived as an essential industry tool to deliver interoperable data exchange standards faster. It is exciting to see the model content used to build innovative airline applications.”

One of the challenges being faced by the aviation industry is the difficulty in the smooth flow of data due to inconsistent use of definitions. Some terms might have different meanings in different systems. Similarly, there might also be instances where multiple terms are used to describe the same concept.

IATA’s AIDM data model acknowledges the menace as mentioned above and aims to increase the consistency of definitions and rapid deployment of industry standards through visibility and quality.

NIIT has recently forayed into the world of blockchain technology and has come up with impressive results in a relatively short period.

Reported by BTCManager on September 19, NIIT released its DLT-based solution “Chain-m” to leverage the aviation industry – primarily to improve the industries’ backend settlement process.
