Parity Launches the First Alternative Zcash Client
Zcash (ZEC), the privacy-centric distributed ledger technology (DLT) based digital asset created by Zooko Wilcox in 2016, has announced the release of Zebra, the first Zcash client written entirely in the Rust programming language. Rust is developed by Parity Technologies and will function as an alternative to Zcash, allowing developers to easily build decentralized applications (dApps) upon the Zcash blockchain, according to a press release on June 17, 2019.
Zcash Unveil Zebra
As stated in its press release, Zcash now has a new alternative client called Zebra. Written entirely in Rust, a multi-paradigm system programming language, Zebra has been developed by Parity Technologies, the brains behind Ethereum’s Parity wallet.
Per the team, Parity Technologies succeeded in completing the first implementation of the new Zcash client two months ahead of schedule and the codebase has now been handed over the Zcash Foundation for further development and maintenance.
Zebra is expected to serve as an independent alternative to Zcash, the official client of Zcash and will enable developers to quickly detect deadly implementation-specific bugs that could harm the entire network.
The team also believes that with Zcash now supporting multiple client implementations, more developers will be attracted to the blockchain project.
Earlier in October 2018, BTCManager informed that the Zcash Foundation had inked a strategic partnership deal aimed at enabling the teams to work on the creation of an alternative full node client for Zcash.
Zebra is part of the product of that forward-thinking maneuver, as the team has hinted that the new client is derived from Parity Bitcoin and it has now been handed over to the Zcash Foundation’s Github repository where it will get forged into a full-featured Zcash client.
The team says the new Zebra client will give Zcash users, miners and devs a new avenue to engage with the community.
Commenting on the excellent milestone, Parity Technologies CTO, Fredrik Harryson reiterated that the successful creation of Zebra represents a win-win scenario for the entire supporters of Zcash.
“The community wins across the board, as there are now more core developers working on clients, with more interests represented and clients taking different approaches on how to build apps upon it. Zcash now has a more diversified community that can seamlessly tailor experiences for Layer 2 developers as well as end-users.”
As reported by BTCManager in February 2019, Zcash rebranded to become the Electric Coin Company, in a bid to foster clarity by creating a clear distinction between the altcoin and the company.
