  1. AZTEC is getting into the ZK ZK rollup game. Outer ZK: hundreds of TPS on mainnet Inner ZK: every one of those txs is private Layer 2 scaling and privacy is coming.

Please remember: The idea that when disaster strikes people panic and social order collapses is very popular. It is also a myth. A huge research literature shows disaster makes people *more* pro-social. They cooperate. They support each other. They're better than ever. 1/x

  3. Things Ethereum has in 2020 that it did not in 2017: * Uniswap * * Status * MakerDAO * ZK Rollups (eg. Loopring), >2k TPS capacity * PoS testnets * Uncle rates < 10% with 10m gas blocks * Gitcoin grants Move the goalposts faster, or else we'll catch up!

Gitcoin grants quadratic funding is not just for funds allocation, it's also a great signaling tool! For the last few rounds, going to (sort by top match) has led me to discover a lot of really cool Ethereum projects I previously did not know about.

This is important groundwork by and co in making Ethereum friendly, and at the same time creating an opportunity to considerably simplify the protocol. Look forward to more excellent hard work and results from 1.x devs in the months to come.

Remember the primary dictum of good economic design: tax the congestible (aka scarce resources aka -ve externalities), subsidize the public goods. Congestible: tx inclusion, MEV, short names, attention, status symbols... Public goods: network security, dev, research, education..

Those who say "grant funding by whales is a bad mechanism, we need [better thing X]" are missing the point. Gitcoin grants is a *trial run* for quadratic funding. The long-run goal is to have tx fees from L2/apps (eg. rollup MEV auctions) feeding into the matching pool directly.

Ethereum 2020: A Roadmap and Outlook The Beacon Chain and BLS12-381 precompile look likely for 2020. If EIP 1559 & account abstraction get owners soon, maybe they'll make it too. There's plenty of parallel work happening but too long for one article.

Negative contributions are a way to let community members express the opinion that they think some project is harmful or even just overrated. Harsh feedback is sometimes necessary feedback!

Recurring contributions are meant to encourage more predictability for recipients. Quadratic freelancers need a stable income! eg. got $30k last round but so far only a $60 match this round. Also eth2 clients, eg.

Reminder: this round of grants has two new features: * Recurring contributions per round (set up now to automatically contribute to next N rounds) * Negative contributions (*reduce* matched donations to a project you don't like)

We should also be building DEX bridges between ethereum and other crypto ecosystems. I've talked to about this re Zcash, though I think we can both work harder to translate the talk into action. Would love to see more.

We should put resources toward a proper (trustless, serverless, maximally Uniswap-like UX) ETH <-> BTC decentralized exchange. It's embarrassing that we still can't easily move between the two largest crypto ecosystems trustlessly.

No point fighting the inevitable, instead let's keep building the alternative. In 5 years when every country has its own Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), will rise as a public, neutral financial platform for the world. On Ethereum, banking is a public good.
